Getting Started with Reindeer Graphicsª Optipix 3.1 Demo The demo you have installed is time-limited. After a week, the plug-ins will prompt you for a serial number, which you can order from the Reindeer Graphics online store. Once you have the demo installed (see below for installation instructions), you can start exploring the functions in Optipix. We have provided two actions that demonstrate the power of Optipix and Photoshop for improving your digital images: Optimize Image and Portrait Enhancement. The main difference between these actions is that Portrait Enhancement takes more care not to enhance blemishs on skin. Try running these actions on some of your RAW or TIFF images. If you have JPEG images, run JPEG Cleaner first before running the actions. The techniques used in Optipix are sensitive to the blocky artefacts created by JPEG compression. If you have any questions, a low-resolution version of the Optipix Guide is included in the archive. The Guide gives instructions and examples for using each of the plug-ins and helpful tips to avoid problems. If you have further questions, please email . Windows: Requirements: The Optipix plug-ins expect you to be running Windows 9x/ME/NT4/2K/XP and Photoshop 5 or later. They have not been comprehensively tested with other operating systems (e.g. NT3.51) or with other programs that claim to emulate the Photoshop plug-in structure (e.g. Digital Darkroom, Canvas, etc.), although they adhere strictly to the guidelines in the Photoshop Developers' Tool Kit and have a very small memory footprint, which should enable them to be compatible with any properly written program that uses that structure. For 16 bit per channel images (16 bit grey scale and 48 bit RGB images), Photoshop 5 or later, or Image Pro Plus 4.2 or later, is required. We are not aware of any other Windows Photoshop-compatible programs that support these images and the full plug-in interface that handles them. When installed in any other program, the plug-ins will function correctly for 8 bit per channel images (8 bit grey scale and 24 bit RGB images). Installation: 1. Run the Optipix 31 Installer.exe program to install the plug-ins. During installation on Windows NT/2K/XP it is necessary to have administrator privileges to write to the C: drive. (If you do not have administrator privileges normally, see item 4, below). The installer will ask you to locate the folder in which to place the plug-in files. Normally this will be the plug-in folder belonging to Photoshop (the default location, depending on your operating system and version of Photoshop, is C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop CS2\Plug-Ins) or whatever other host program you are using. Some programs allow you to select any folder location (e.g., Photoshop using the Edit->Preferences menu). Locate the folder in which to place the files and click OK. The installer will do the rest. Note that you can install the plug-ins in a temporary location and then drag them to the final location later, but you can NOT install them on one machine and subsequently copy them to another computer. 2. One of the two action files, "Optipix 3 Actions.atn" is included in the archive. You can load this file into Photoshop by double-clicking on it or by using the "Load Set" function of the Actions palette. 3. The user's guide called "Optipix3Guide.pdf" is in the zip archive as a single .pdf file. If you do not already have Acrobat Reader installed on your computer, you can run the Acrobat Reader Installer provided on the Photoshop CD. It is also available on the web at . 4. Windows NT/2K/XP-Server Note: You may have difficulty running the software without administrator-level privileges. By using the plug-in Filter->OPTIPIX->Preferences you can force all of the temporary files written by Optipix will be placed in any arbitrary location. Otherwise, they will be created and modified on C:\ which can cause problems in some cases. One recommended location would be "C:\Temporary Files\". Macintosh: Requirements The Optipix plug-ins expect you to be running Mac OS 9 or OS X and Adobe Photoshop¨ 5 or later. They have not been comprehensively tested with other operating systems (e.g. OS 7.x) or with other programs that claim to emulate the Photoshop plug-in structure (e.g. Canvas, PhotoDeluxe, etc.), although they adhere strictly to the guidelines in the Photoshop Developers' Tool Kit and have a very small memory footprint, which should enable them to be compatible with any properly written program that uses that structure. More details are provided in Appendix 1 of the tutorial. The plug-ins are PowerPC only -- you cannot use them on a 68K-based Macintosh. For 16 bit per channel images (16 bit grey scale and 48 bit RGB images), Photoshop 5 or later is required. We are not aware of any other Macintosh Photoshop-compatible programs that support these images and the full plug-in interface that handles them. When installed in any other program, the plug-ins will function correctly for 8 bit per channel images (8 bit grey scale and 24 bit RGB images). Since there is no 68K code in Optipix, NIH Image and some other similar legacy software will not recognize these plug-ins. Installation: 1. Open Optipix 31 Installer.pkg file to install the plug-ins. This will ask you to locate the folder in which to place the plug-in files. Normally this will be the plug-in folder belonging to Photoshop. Locate the folder in which to place the files and click OK. The installer will do the rest. Note that you can install the plug-ins in a temporary location and then drag them to the final location later, but you can NOT install them on one machine and subsequently copy them to another computer. 2.
