The Britton Bridge

BrittonIn 1862, Britton enlisted in the local infantry and was rushed to Kentucky. There, he and his company, surrounded in the their first skirmish, were captured and became prisoners of war. After the war, Britton read law and was admitted to the Indiana and Kansas bars. But life as a lawyer did't appeal to him so he returned to Rockville where he again took up carpentry. Continue »

Moscow, Indiana Rebuilds

Moscow, IndianaOn June 3, 2008 an F3 tornado ripped through the surrounding community, and the unthinkable happened - our beloved bridge, when the winds had settled, had been torn from it's piers and thrown into to the valley of the Big Flatrock River. Thorpe Ford

Thorp FordThe inscription "Cross This Bridge At A Walk" dates back to the horse and buggy days and was placed at both ends of the bridges. The rhythm of the horses hooves could do more structural damage to the bridge than the weight of a modern day truck. For the same reason, soldiers broke cadence when crossing also. Thirty-one bridges remain with 10 retired to vehicular traffic.
